Wet Felting Fundamentals

With Debbie Kahn

Learn the fundamentals of wet felting, including a presentation on why certain fibers felt, types of fiber, various fiber layouts, how pH, heat, and soap affect felting, and what supplies contribute to a successful wet felting session. In class we will make samples utilizing different layouts to learn the drafting, shingling, and fulling processes. The safe procedures for use of a sander in wet felting will be demonstrated. We will also cover how to calculate shrinkage and how to use a shrinkage coefficient to determine the starting size for wet felt layouts to achieve a desired finished product size. The basics of nuno felting will be covered, including proper selection of fabric, the differences between types of silk, and which silks are easiest to use when felting. Handouts will be provided covering the wet felting process, nuno felting, and the calculation of shrinkage. All fiber and silk will be provided as well as a tool for felting. All experience levels welcome.
